David Pujol Continues a Tradition Dating Back to 1758
Ten Generations of Wine in Masarac
David Pujol Cargol works eighteen hectares of vineyards between the Empordà plain and the Albera Massif. His family winery, with over two hundred and fifty years of history, produces natural wines that express the granitic terroir of Masarac without artifice.
A Heritage Dating Back to 1758
Barcelona/Newsroom, January 21, 2026.
The Pujol Cargol family has been cultivating vineyards in Masarac since the 18th century. David, born in 1986 among these very vines, represents the eleventh generation dedicated to the craft. With a degree in Enology from the Rovira i Virgili University, he has taken on the responsibility of keeping alive a tradition passed from father to son for more than two hundred and fifty years.
The winery, located on the border between the plain and the Albera mountain range, was recently modernized without losing the roots that define it. David oversees the entire process: from pruning to bottling.
Old Vines on Granite and Slate
The eighteen hectares of estate-owned land spread across granitic and slate soils that lend minerality and character to the wines. The varietal portfolio focuses on indigenous Empordà grapes: White, Red, and Black Grenache; Carignan in its three versions; and Macabeo. These are joined by small plantings of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
The winery’s privileged location, influenced by both the sea and the mountains, creates a unique microclimate. David works with practices close to organic farming, respecting the natural cycles of the old vines, some of which have been rooted in the soil for decades. #Naturalwines
Indigenous Yeasts and Zero Chemical Corrections
The Pujol Cargol philosophy is built on non-intervention: fermentations with indigenous yeasts, minimal or non-existent filtration, and an absence of chemical corrections. David follows a model inspired by Burgundy: clean, expressive wines without unnecessary additives. The goal is for every bottle to faithfully reflect the landscape of Masarac.
The El Missatger range—available in red, white, and rosé—leads the production, crafted exclusively from native varieties. Other labels such as Peel Reeds or La Vinya d’en Tomàs complete a small but coherent catalog. The winery receives visitors by appointment, always in small groups for approximately two-hour sessions. It is a discreet project that has earned significant recognition within Catalonia’s natural wine circles.
